Kobarid Museum - Visitor Impressions

Let's see what visitors have to say about the museum. (Personal statements from the guestbook - Kobarid Museum 1999-2000)

Let's put an end to war, people!

In memory of Grandpa, who bravely fought in these mountains.

The last traces of the war. I hope that we shall never encounter another like it except in memory. Kobarid is a very beautiful place. I came that I might see it as Ernest Hemingway did.

War has only seeming winners and real losers.

Anyone who hates war should see this exhibition.

War is a terrible thing.

Are we born so that we can be killed by weapons? Thank you for the incredible information. Let me ponder: is it nice to kill? It is better to understand flowers, trees ...

I'm glad I saw this incredible exhibition. These atrocities should never be repeated (Vaclav Havel, President of the Czech Republic, 1994).

Never again! (Arpad Göncz, President of the Republic of Hungary and Milan Kučan, President of the Republic of Slovenia, 1994).

Goodbye to weapons. That would be the only worthwhile response for the future.

We came that we might learn something.

An excellent and revealing memorialisation of the eternal madness of war.

Outstanding museum regarding human foolishness.

Was it not enough that we had had a First World War?

People who visit the museum may not have known that the colour of the Soča was red and not blue as it is today.

I recognised my grandfather in one picture. I am deeply moved.

Thank you for the fantastic tour of your very moving exhibit. It is a superb monument, both to the tragedy of war and the spirit of mankind in his struggle for his ideals. Today has been a memorable experience for us all (J.B.H., Commander, US Navy, 1995).

So shocking - so disturbing (Robert K. Dornan, member of US Congress, 1995).

The most shocking exhibition, which I shall never forget.

Not merely a war museum - perhaps the most brilliant element is that it is an anti-war museum without sublimity or didacticism.

I don't understand how after seeing this exhibit someone could speak of victory and heroism.

My heart tearfully departs from this place.

Only one question remains: who was served by this war?

Evaluation? I am ashamed.

On a pilgrimage to Čuklo and Rombon, where our father had fought.

I was particularly stunned by the laying out of medals before the portraits of wounded soldiers.

Those that can only think of war should be kept in the Black Room for two days or more ...

Poor father, who was part of the war in Kobarid.

This is absolute folly.

They should no longer wage war. They should write books. Thus they turn Rommels (Erwin Rommels) into Hemingways (Vladimir Lukin, President of the Committee for International Relations of the Russian Duma, 1999).

A non-nationalistic war museum - something completely new! Super.

This visit is dedicated to my grandfather, who here spent the best portion of his youth.

After visiting the museum, I was resting near the roadside door and I addressed an elegant old Italian who came straight out: "How was it?"  Silence. I waited. I began to doubt that I had actually addressed him when he said quietly, "Marvellous!" and then, obviously shaken, he slowly marched off to the left towards his car. Only then did I realise that he was lost in thought.
