Mountaineering
From simple hikes over the hills and smaller mountains of the entrance way to the Julian Alps to the wildest precipitous rock faces upon which railed safety paths lead the way. From hanging by the fingers of one hand from boulders to sport climbing and regular paths. The mountains of Slovenia occupy a special place in the heart of the nation, and thus hiking and mountaineering are exceptionally well developed here.

The paths in the Julian Alps are reinforced, arranged and clearly marked. Most of the mountain huts are simple and don't fall into the category of mountain hotels. In the summer, however, they are frequently visited and filled up.

Just because the Julian Alps do not reach heights above 3,000 or 4,000 meters doesn't mean that they are a tame bunch. They are repeatedly described as wild and severely sloped and therein lies their appeal. Steep precipitous walls characterise them (especially on the northern side) as well as limestone rock that is more brittle in some places, which you may be accustomed to from places like the Dolomites or the granite of the Central Alps.
The reinforced trails are well-marked, and in exposed sections, they are adequately equipped with wire ropes. All trails are well described in the many guidebooks and maps that can be found in online stores or at booksellers. Before heading off on your more or less demanding adventure depending on your choices, make sure that you are properly equipped and remember that the Julian Alps are also characterised by major temperature fluctuations and variations from the temperatures you'll experience on arrival in Kobarid.
