Through the gate of the National Park
Although the Park spans more than 840 square kilometres, one might still observe it all from the peak. This is Triglav. A 2864 m tall mountain that is the highest in Slovenia, and according to which, the Park also got its name. The Park is located in the north-western portion of Slovenia, in the Eastern Julian Alps, and represents a special conservation regime.
In terms of landscape, the Park is very diverse. The Julian Alps are limestone, so there are rugged and sharp mountain peaks and their walls descend deep into the bottom of glacial valleys. The area is filled with high mountain karst phenomena, with two thirds of the park covered in forest. All of this together with the wide range of ecosystems creates a true marvel of nature. The area's greatest resources are the groundwater, karst springs and glacial lakes and streams. Among those streams is the Soča River, which represents one of the two major Julian Alp rivers besides the Sava.

The Soča River Valley is located on the west side of the Park. Its rich watersheds constitute the "wet" part of the Park where in addition to Lake Bohinj, which is the largest lake in Slovenia, the area is crisscrossed with springs, waterfalls and other hydrological phenomena.
On account of all of these water sources, you will sometimes get the feeling the water is flowing simultaneously from the right and left. The water that is pressed into the river and its many tributaries gratefully encourages life all the way to the Adriatic Sea. Since the valley is significantly impacted by the Mediterranean climate, the flora and fauna have appropriately adapted to these conditions.
What is in store for you at the Park? Huge plots of green that display the dense forests within. Soft grassy armchairs upon curved hills and wild steep cliffs that run from deep gorges upwards to high places under the heavens. Awaiting you also is an abundance of mountain flowers and animal life, of which you will discover anew around each corner.
